My Favorite Watercolor Paints

Of all the many questions that I get from students and other artists, through emails and DM's, by far the most common question is a surprising one:

More than anything else people want to know what my favorite watercolor paints are!

Since I get this question so much I felt that it needed its own post. Really, its pretty simple, like with any art supplies I am always drawn to colors, before anything else. So, that means that I try any products, both high and low end, if I like the colors. With that as my compass, I have found some beautiful serendipitous surprises like this set:

Its the cheapest set that I own and yet it was the set that was in many of the photographs in my book, and over and over again this is the set that people ask about, and its only $7.99!!!! Head over here to buy it.

Then there is the set pictured bellow, I like to pair it with the set above. Its a German brand called Angora, available here.

Here are these two sets together in a shot with my demo painting from the first chapter of my book:

Having all those colors at my finger tips is dreamy!!

I also love to take my watercolors along with me when I travel, so over the past couple of years I have worked on streamlining my travel painting kit. Here are my two favorite travel watercolor painting sets, they are by AQUAnaut and Bianyo, both are available on Amazon, here and here.

Recently I have also been experimenting with this sweet higher end set by Daniel Smith. I love that these paints have actual ground up minerals and gems like Amethyst, Jade and Hematite, in the paint, eeeeep!!! So much good energy!

My favorite watercolor paper is hands down Arche brand, this size pad in particular is the pad that I always come back to.
If you'd like to learn all about my Watercolor Painting Practice, how I gather inspiration through watercolor at home and when I travel, what else I pack in my travel painting kit, developing a daily practice of seeing, and so much more.
Check out my Online Class, Episode 1: Inspiration is Everywhere :: Developing a Daily Practice of Seeing, available for instant & forever access for only $25!

The class includes 6 start to finish watercolor painting demo videos, a video unit on all of my favorite "must have" supplies in my studio, videos on getting to know more about me and my co-teacher Mati McDonough, as well as a fun unit on color treasure hunting!

While I'm at it another question that I get asked all the time is about these glass jars of brightly colored paints that also appear all over my book and often in my Instagram feed. These are Flashe brand Vinyl paints and they are available HERE!

Enjoy and Happy Painting!!!

Studio Chat with Faith & Mati: Finishing, Pricing and Selling your Work

Hi Beautiful Painters,

Today we are kicking off a new video series that we are really excited to share with you! Our Studio Chats video series, where we gather questions from our students, hot topics that we want to chat about, and then dive deeply into these questions and all things creative.

Throughout our co-teaching, both in our Painting the Sacred Within and our Abstract Bliss classes, we have often filmed these Studio Chats as a way of giving our students a behind the scenes peek into our thoughts, lives and what keeps us inspired. Chatting with a friend always gives us more clarity and we love sharing some of the knowledge that we've gained along our painting journeys.

In this first Studio Chat we explore the topics of Finishing, Pricing and Selling your Work. Enjoy, and come follow along with us on our new Instagram account @paintingthesacredwithin where we share our collaborations and inspiration to inspire your creative journey!

Collaboration with Lou & Grey

It was such a special pleasure to have 4 of my watercolor paintings purchased by the Anne Taylor Inc. company Lou & Grey last year, to become fabric designs in their Autumn 2016 collection!

In the summer of 2015 I began diving deeply into my explorations in watercolor painting, I was especially inspired that summer by a month long trip to Europe in which I took just a few supplies with me. I traveled with a watercolor painting set, a roll of sable brushes, and a couple of cold pressed Arche watercolor paper pads. With these simple tools I painted daily on that trip, gathering color & shape inspiration from all the beautiful spots we traveled through. Lou & Grey purchased the paintings the following Autumn and all 4 of the paintings that became part of the Lou & Grey collection were created on that trip!

Seeing my paintings turned into fabric was a complete JOY and now I love wearing the pieces from the collection!!

This is the original triangle piece that the pictured fabric pattern was created from.

This project reminds me that big or small you just never know where your explorations will take you!

Art Making in Morocco

In my recent post about our transformative retreat to Marrakech, Morocco last April, I talked about our daily routine there and the things we saw and did, but I did not dive deeply into our art making practices there. I felt like that deserved it's own post! The magic, the other worldliness, of that place washed over each of us from the very moment we arrived.
As we absorbed all of the foreign sounds, scents, colors, patterns & motifs, I really could not wait to get working in our painting pavilion.... a beautiful tent that Peacock Pavilions offered us for our use as a studio space during our stay! On our second day there we jumped right in, I unrolled a huge piece of canvas and we created a communal painting, each of us adding drawings, and then pouring washes of colored paint on top.

Like everything that we experienced on our journey, painting together was deeply bonding and fun with these adventurous women. Each of us was so open to every beautiful experience that we shared during our time together...

With each visit out and about around Marrakech and beyond we gathered inspiration in details, small motifs, colors, and especially the good luck symbol of the hand with an eye at the center of the palm, called a Hamsa.

Back to that first painting session in Morocco... Our communal painting turned into an act of worship as we carried it outside to allow the paint to dry. Once outside we began to rub handfuls of the local red earth into the surface of the piece, and then we scattered handfuls of flowers over the top of this.

Spontaneously our group gathered around the painting, a bunch of us sat crosslegged, holding hands while offering tears and prayers up. It was truly a moment I will carry in my heart always. A moment of pure blessed gratitude.

Later on in the week we cut that large communal painting up into squares for each of us. These we continued working on, turning them into dream catchers by stitching them onto a large hop which we decorated with ribbons, tassels and pom poms.

I know that many of these dream catchers have gone on to decorate sacred spaces and personal altars in these women's homes. I hung mine in my favorite room, our screened in porch, where it daily offers me reminders of this beautiful experience!

I can not wait to journey back to Morocco in October and see what new creative adventures await! Find out all the details about our autumn 2017 Marrakech retreat here!

Costa Rica Gratitude Offering

Hi beautiful!
How are you feeling right this moment? Every year, when December comes I feel like time speeds up, and I have to remind myself to slow down by making an effort to be in the NOW, even as my mind is jumping ahead. One of the fun ways that I'm welcoming "now" this year is through creating a Botanical Advent of painted leaves for each day in December, and taping them to our dining room wall, just a small thing that's bringing me a heap of inspiration in this busy season!
I'm looking forward to stepping back and taking time off over the next few weeks to celebrate Solstice, Christmas and ring in the New Year with my family! Before that happens there is still time to order from my shop, I'll be shipping gift orders up until Friday, December 16th, that's one more week to order prints, originals and cards....after a huge shop update everything in my shop is looking full and beautiful, including my new abstract original Passages series. Come have a look around.
Connecting with you over the past year has made my heart swell, thank you for your amazing support of my work, as a HUGE thank you I'd like to share a gratitude invitation for you.
As I look ahead to 2017, one of the things I am most excited about are the retreats that I'll be teaching in Costa Rica in the spring, my time there every year is full of refreshment, renewal and creative discovery....
